The Wrentham Police Department is currently seeking applicants for Police Officer Lateral Transfers.

The Wrentham Police Department seeks motivated, dependable, and community oriented police officers for lateral transfer to this department. The applicant must be currently employed by a civil service police department and be eligible for transfer.

The applicant will have successfully completed a MPTC full-time police academy, must possess Massachusetts motor vehicle operators license, Massachusetts license to carry firearms, successfully complete a comprehensive pre-employment background investigation, physical, drug and psychological testing, possess problem solving ability, believes in a community policing model, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.

Located mid way between Boston and Providence, Wrentham is approximately 23 sq. miles with a population of more than 11, 000.  Wrentham is home of the Wrentham Premium Village Outlet Mall which full time officers regularly work paid details for purposes of traffic enforcement and crime prevention.

The Wrentham Police Department offers the Quinn Bill M.G.L. Chapter 41 Section 108L benefit to all new hires who, at the time of their hire are approved by the State to receive such benefits under Chapter 41 Section 108L.

There are three lakes in Wrentham including Lake Pearl which is a 212 acre body of water which is patrolled by officers in the Wrentham Police Department’s 17’ Boston Whaler Police Boat.

During the summer, full time officers patrol the Wrentham State Forest, covering 1,027 acres and 23 miles of trails, utilizing state of the art police mountain bikes and ATV patrol.

Child Pornography Case Leads To Jail Time

Possessing child porn

               A Wrentham man pled guilty to 12 indictments of possessing child pornography in Norfolk Superior Court August 7, 2013 and was sentenced to a year and a half incarceration, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey.

               “Edward Bourget admitted to having more than a thousand images and videos of children, some still toddlers, being sexually abused,” District Attorney Morrissey said after the plea. “The maximum penalty for the crime is 5 years state prison. We requested a 4 to 5 year sentence, followed by 10 years of probation with sex offender treatment, GPS tracking of his movements, no internet use and no unsupervised contact with children under 18 when he is released.”

               Morrissey praised the investigation by the Wrentham Police Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Computer Crimes Unit of the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council, saying “there was a tremendous amount of work necessary to process and develop this much evidence, and Assistant District Attorney Anne Yas did good work bringing this to a successful conclusion.”

               Judge Kenneth C. Fishman sentenced Bourget, 49, of Blackberry Hill Road in Wrentham, to 2 ½ years in a house of correction, 18 months to serve, followed by 6 years of probation with conditions that he undergo sex offender treatment, be subject to GPS monitoring, submit a DNA sample, possess no adult or child pornography and have no internet access - enforced by a firewall to monitored by probation.

               “Be it possession, creation or distribution, any involvement with child pornography encourages and abets the criminal violation of children and the damaging of young lives,” District Attorney Morrissey said. “Society needs to stand against this at every turn. I cannot thank the Wrentham police and their partners enough for their work here.”

               From September 2011 until January 2012, Bourget used the screen name “MWMfromMA” to communicate with a party he did not know was an undercover U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Task Force agent. That communication began when Bourget answered a posting offering sex with an underage girl in Florida. Probable cause was developed to obtain a search warrant for Bourget’s residence stemming from those communications.

Housebreak on Archer Street leads to Criminal Charges

On July 1st, 2013, Officers Derick Cassidy and Jon Coliflores responded to a residence on Archer Street for a reported housebreak.  The homeowners left in the morning, only to come home to find their door kicked in and property stolen.
Following an investigation, Detective Sergeant Barrett has filed charges against two Wrentham teens; one being a juvenile.

Theft of Property on Summer Street Leads to Arrests and Charges

On July 5th, 2013, Officer Derick Cassidy took a report for stolen property from residents of Summer Street.  A subsequent investigation by Detective Sergeant James Barrett led to the arrest of two men, Ephraim Hunter of Millis and Jason Dunston of Medway.

Several items have been recovered, further linking the suspects to the crime.  Both men are charged with receiving stolen property with a value greater than $250.00.

A Breaking and Entering Call Leads to an Arrest for Illegal Cultivation of Marijuana

On June 13th, 2013, Detective Sergeant James Barrett and Detective Barry McGrath are investigating the illegal cultivation of marijuana on Dedham Street in Wrentham.

The investigation began when Sgt. Jeffrey Smith, Officer Jon Coliflores and Officer Derick Cassidy responded to an apartment that had been the victim of a break.  After making the determination that the downstairs apartment had been victimized, officers went to the upstairs apartment to find the door had been kicked in while no one was home.

Sgt. Smith and officers entered the apartment to investigate the break and were overcome with the smell of fresh marijuana.  During their sweep of the home, Officers discovered a high tech green house inside the master bedroom containing potted marijuana plants.  The renter was later taken into custody by Officer Cassidy.

Officers secured the scene and contacted Detective Sergeant Barrett who responded to the scene to assist Detective McGrath.  Detective Sergeant Barrett obtained a search warrant for the apartment and seized evidence of unlawful cultivation of marijuana.

Pedestrian Crosswalk Enforcement Initiative

Wrentham Police Obtain Grant to Target Town Center Pedestrian Crosswalk Enforcement

The Wrentham Police Department was awarded a $3000 Pedestrian/Bicycle Grant by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) for 2013.  This traffic enforcement grant will focus on Wrentham Center, particularly crosswalk enforcement, as well as bicycle safety along the Pan-Mass Challenge route.

The Pan Mass Challenge is a 192 mile bicycle ride to raise money for cancer research and travels through Wrentham.  Officers will stage in areas of concern and cite motorists who violate traffic laws, such as passing at a safe distance, failing to yield to oncoming bicyclist, waiting for safe opportunity to overtake bicycle, etc.

There are nineteen crosswalks in the center area, eight of which cross South Street.  South Street’s speed limit reduces from 40mph to 25 mph northbound and 40mph to 20 mph southbound. Due to this sharp speed zone reduction, vehicles rarely slow to appropriate speeds making it difficult, if not impossible, for vehicles to stop for pedestrians in time.

The Wrentham Police intend to conduct targeted enforcement of speed and pedestrian crossings violations primarily in the center of Town. Crosswalk law enforcement decoys will also be used and serve as a more focused tactic to the pedestrian crosswalk problem. 

This enforcement will occur throughout the spring and summer, mainly during the months of June, July, and August.  The goal of this enforcement is to see more compliance with motorists stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks and better bicycle/motor vehicle safety.

The purpose of the adulticide application is to control nuisance and/or virus carrying adult mosquitoes. The control product being used is DUET (EPA Reg.# 1021-1795-8329) applied in ultra-low volume (ULV) sprayers at a rate of approximately one half ounce per acre of finished spray.

Car Crash Leads To Arrest

On 4/21/13 at about 5:40 p.m., Wrentham Police responded to a single car motor vehicle accident on Rt.140 in the area of 205 Dedham Street. On arrival, officers found three occupants of a 1997 Toyota Corolla all of whom were seriously injured.

The operator was identified as Rhiannon Gately, date of birth 09/28/81, of 183 Cornell Street, Roslindale, MA.  The operator was extricated by Wrentham Fire Department using the Jaws of Life and was transported to a Rhode Island hospital via Med Flight.

The front seat passenger was identified as James A. Gately, date of birth 06/29/78, of 183 Cornell Street, Roslindale, MA. He was seriously injured, was transported to Norwood Hospital and transferred to Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston.

Their child, an 8 year old female, was seriously injured and transported to a Rhode Island Hospital.

Preliminary investigation determined the passenger, James Gately, grabbed the steering wheel of the vehicle while his wife was driving northbound on Rt. 140. As a result of grabbing the steering wheel, it is alleged James Gately took over operation of the vehicle, causing it to cross the center line and strike a tree on the southbound shoulder.

James Gately is charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Serious Bodily Injury Resulting; Assault & Battery With a Dangerous Weapon (the vehicle); Operating After Suspension and Child Endangerment. He is in police custody at the Women & Brigham Hospital, held without bail. James Gately will be arraigned on Monday morning, April 22. 2013.

Norfolk Police assisted at the accident scene along with Mass State Police Accident Reconstruction, Trooper George.

Investigation is continuing with Wrentham Officer Saulnier; Officer Cowley and Officer Schwalbe.

Boston Marathon Law Enforcement Response

To “Protect and Serve” is the motto commonly associated with the profession of law enforcement.  When a senseless, tragic event occurs, like the attacks of April 15^th, this adage has no boundaries.  As such, the Wrentham Police Department has deployed resources to assist our partners in Boston, as part of the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (METRO) contingent.  Wrentham is an active member of METRO, a consortium comprised of 42 Police departments and 2 Sheriff’s departments, with hundreds of dedicated officers assigned to respond and assist agencies who have incidents in their cities or towns that will require resources beyond their normal capacity.   Obviously, the investigation into the Boston Marathon bombings falls into this category.  It is a 24/7 operation, requiring replenishments of personnel, among various other things, for a prolonged amount of time.  Our officers are on scene to perform whatever functions are requested by our host agency.  The scope of these specific assignments changes on a daily basis. What does not change however, is the unified primary goal of the local, state and federal law enforcement personnel on scene- to bring a renewed sense of security to the resilient residents and business owners of the City of Boston, the strong people of the State of Massachusetts and the proud citizens of United Stated of America. 

Felony Warrant for ** Stephen F. Deagle **

 

Wrentham Police secured a felony arrest warrant for Stephen F. Deagle, D.O.B. 07/23/89, whose last known address was 91 Main Street, Quincy, MA.

The suspect is accused of stealing two gold bracelets from the Zales Jewelry Store at the Wrentham Mall on March 25, 2013 at 4:45 p.m. The two bracelets are valued at over $10,000.00.

Deagle walked in to the store and asked a salesperson to show him the two gold bracelets. When the clerk handed him the bracelets, Deagle fled the store and ran to his vehicle, a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon, color black, Mass. Registration BR90EB. The vehicle then sped out of the parking lot.

The entire incident was captured on surveillance video in the store and his getaway was captured on surveillance video in the parking lot, including the registration number on his vehicle. Police suspect he had an accomplice in the car.

Along with this incident, Deagle is a suspect in a similar theft at another jewelry store and has an outstanding warrant for a parole violation. He had been committed to a New Hampshire Jail for approximately 16 months before his release on parole which occurred March 21, 2012.

OUI Arrest Leads To Loaded Handgun Discovery

At 7:40am on Sunday morning (3-24-2013), Officer Dan Morris came upon an apparently disabled car on Manchester Drive.  Subsequent contact with the man in the car led to an arrest of Arthur Henebury for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.  A search of the vehicle following the arrest led to the discovery of a loaded handgun.  Mr. Henebury does not have the proper license to possess the firearm and was also charged with its possession.  Officer Morris was assisted by Officer Scott Ellis at the scene.

Arthur Henebury was released on bail and will be arraigned at the Wrentham District Court.

Heroin Deal Interrupted Results in Arrest of Two

Wrentham Police Officers patrolling the west end of town interrupt a heroin drug deal and arrest Timothy Cullen, age 25 of Norfolk, Massachusetts and Carlos Pena, age 29 of Providence, Rhode Island.

Wrentham Police Sergeant James Barrett and Detective Barry McGrath were patrolling the west end of town on February 4, 2013 in response to residents concerns of potential drug deals being conducted roadside in and around their neighborhoods.

According to the officer’s reports, they came across a vehicle parked on an isolated area of Summer Street, Wrentham and recognized the operator as Timothy Cullen, a Norfolk resident.

Officers observed an uncapped hypodermic needle in plain view in Cullen’s vehicle and based upon statements made, determined Cullen was waiting to purchase Heroin from a drug dealer.

Within moments, Sergeant Barrett observed a male, subsequently identified as Carlos Pena of Providence, RI operating a Volvo station wagon on Summer Street driving toward him.  Based upon information at the scene, Sergeant Barrett believed Pena to be arriving to sell heroin to Cullen.

  

Carlos Pena was arrested on scene and transported to Norwood Hospital for evaluation.  Timothy Cullen was also arrested and transported to Wrentham Police Headquarters for booking.

House Breaks on the Rise Again!

 

Warning: House breaks are on the rise again, in Wrentham and everywhere else. The rise is associated largely with epidemic drug abuse, specifically pill and heroin addicts. Obviously, the addicts need money to buy drugs so they break into homes, steal property, fence it and get their fix.

Wrentham police officers will continue to be vigilant with their efforts through traffic enforcement; neighborhood patrols and investigation.

The rest of you should consider the following as you go about your daily routines:

Be Aware: If you see someone in or out of a vehicle and it strikes you as suspicious, follow your instinct and call 911. Don’t hesitate because you think it may turn out to be nothing. Try to keep the suspicious person or vehicle in sight until police respond; try to get a plate number off the car; a good description of the suspect; the vehicle, etc.

Hide Valuables: DO NOT keep valuables in your master bedroom. When the bad guys commit house breaks, they knock on the door and ring the bell first to make sure no one is home. If you are home, make yourself known. You don’t have to open the door, but go to a window and yell out that you’re busy and can’t come to the door. This will make bad guys go away. If you pretend you’re not home, they’re coming in with you inside. They’ll kick in a door and go directly to the master bedroom. They’ll grab your pillowcase and stuff it with your jewelry and anything else of value. Next, they’ll head for the bathrooms because they want your pain killer medications so don’t hide anything in the bathroom and keep your pills somewhere else.

They want to get in and out quickly, so they often don’t go through other rooms after they hit the master bedroom and bathrooms, therefore; if you hide your valuables in other parts of the house, you’ll likely cut your loss. Be creative with hiding places.

Alarms: Whether or not you install a monitored alarm is up to you. More importantly, install an alarm that accomplishes two things. The alarm inside your home should shriek so loud that it unnerves the intruder. So loud, that the bad guy should need to cover his ears. The outside alarm should be mounted as high on your house as possible and be as loud as possible. The alarm horns should be directed toward neighboring homes and the street to attract attention. This will interrupt the intruders and alert others to the problem at your house. Give trusted neighbors your alarm code. Provide your contact information to WPD.

Cars: If you’re going out in one car, DO NOT leave the other car in the garage. Doing so, gives the appearance you’re not home. Leave the spare car in the driveway and if you have a long driveway, park it closer to the street. This will prevent the bad guys from pulling up into your driveway and out of view. If you don’t have two cars and are leaving for an extended period of time, ask a neighbor who has more than one car to park it at the end of your driveway.

Neighborhood Watch: Form neighborhood watch groups. Share your cell phone numbers; descriptions of your cars; vacation plans; alarm codes; with trusted neighbors. This way, if one of you observe something out of place, you can call your neighbor. This may extend to one neighbor taking in another’s trash barrels, Fed Ex or UPS deliveries, newspapers, etc. All of these items left out are clues to the bad guys that no one is home. Protect yourselves!
